i actually wrote about this! i like the web 1 sentimentality of neocities, but am also critical of the "nostalgia factor" western internet culture seems to thrive upon. unfortunately, i do enjoy the matrix (1999) vibe of this site a little TOO much for me to change it right away. the personality factor and individuality through bricolage HTML + commandeered CSS is quite a pleasure to make and spend time on.
i found that other websites weren't doing it for me, and the DIY methodology so inherent to most things i create was sorely missing from prettier, more finished website builders. i guess i'm just not a squarespace guy, but HTML requires me to be far more precise than a block builder/finished UI could ever allow me!
i think coding is also quite fun---before my recent development kick, i hadn't picked up HTML in some years and felt rusty. i remember taking out HTML and SGML books at the library and not getting the hang of it until i was much, MUCH older. all that for some hatsune miku autoplayer on my old tumblr
